Sierra Nevada Water Polo

We’re a nonprofit organization committed to growing the sport of water polo for youth in the local region. Water polo is a unique team sport that combines the dual skills of swimming and ball handling, with play elements of hockey, basketball, and soccer. Water polo players can typically swim over 1.5 miles in a game! Physiologists have ranked the sport as one of the most strenuous activities of all. In 1991, water polo was quoted as the “Best overall sport in terms of physiological demands placed on the athlete,” by a panel of physiology experts from all over the U.S. (Ludovise).

Sierra Nevada Water Polo, Inc. was incorporated in 2008 as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. The stated mission of Sierra Nevada Water Polo, Inc. (“SNWP”) is to promote, facilitate, coordinate and provide water polo training and competition for youths in the Truckee Meadows region. More specifically, SNWP has provided youths from Elementary School to High School ages in the Reno and broader communities (including Truckee, CA) with seasonal water polo training and competition. For many years SNWP and its predecessors hosted the Silver State Shootout, a high school age water polo tournament for boys and girls (up to 16 teams for each) held at Idlewild pool in Reno the weekend after Labor Day. The Reno boys team won this tournament in 2012 against teams from California, Oregon and Utah. We do have alumni that have gone on to play water polo in College, and in one case with the U.S. National Team.

SNWP’s roots in the region can be traced to the provision of water polo at the high school level and below from the 1970’s forward in the Reno area. Often water polo is a welcome relief for young competitive swimmers tired of the dreariness of lap swimming. Water polo is known to keep swimmers in the water when they tire of competitive swimming. This sport also is a means to entice early learning swimmers further into the pool with a team sport that combines swimming with other ball handling sport attributes.

All of our Board members have played water polo and very much desire to enable the sport for youths in our Sierra Nevada area.
